SLANT LID LADY'S DESK. Late 19th century. The desk with kingwood, rosewood, satinwood, walnut and mahogany veneers applied to all visible surfaces. Bombay lid, sides and back with parquetry sunbursts. The rectangular top above a concave frieze over a sloping lid opening to a fitted interior of shelves over two aligned drawers at the rear of the tooled leather writing surface. The lid is flanked by seated gilt bronze puttis holding torches on mounts cast with leaf tips. The Bombay lid with parquetry sunburst flanked by marquetry vinery. The desk with three aligned drawers in the apron raised on delicate slender cabriole legs with boule mounts ending in sabots. SIZE: 44" h overall x 28" w x 20 1/2" d. CONDITION: original polish with some filled surfaces, very minor lifting of parquetry. Otherwise good. PROVENANCE: Private Southern New England Collection. (05-754/TG). $800-1,200.
