VERNER STYLE FLINTLOCK RIFLE & 2 PISTOL SET. Andrew Verner of Bucks County, Pennsylvania was a master builder of flintlock rifles & pistols. He is believed to have worked in the 1770's-1790's. His work is among the finest examples of the Allentown & Bucks County school flintlocks. Jerry Kirklin began building contemporary recreations of flintlocks in 1975. His work was some of the finest of his era. Jerry passed on November, 8, 2023 at age 83. This rare offering is an historical recreation based on a set of Andrew Verner originals. They exhibit Verner's distinctive styling with his trademark double headed eagles. (1). PENNSYLVANIA LONG RIFLE. Cal. 50. NSN. Bbl. 46 1/2" octagon measuring 7/8" across flats has a fine plum browned finish. Top fl;at is signed "J. Kirklin". German silver blade front with fixed V notch rear sight. Iron lock & hammer has simple line engraving. Curled plain trigger. Pin fastened full length cheek piece stock of fine curly maple has Verner's trademark curved toe line. Right side has a pierced, segmented & engraved brass patch box with lid hinged along the lower edge. Additional brass fittings include crescent buttplate, toe plate, sideplate, finger curl trigger guard and engraved forearm plate with attached faceted thimble. Brass tipped hardwood ramrod is held by 2 faceted brass pipes. Silver ornamentation features Verner's trademark double headed eagle on the forend along with an 8 point star on the cheekpiece and an oval wrist plate. Silver wire inlays are found behind the lock & sideplate areas, forward of the trigger guard and along the toe line. Floral pattern incise carving borders the cheekpiece, top tang & thimble. Straight line incise carving is found along the toeline, forearm & ram rod channel. Weight 8lbs. o.4 ozs. (2). MATCHED PAIR OF FLINTLOCK PISTOLS. Cal. 50. NSN. Bbls. 9 3/16" of tapered octagon with fine plum browned finish. Top flats are marked "J. Kirklin". Iron locks & hammers have simple line engraving. Pin fastened curly maple stocks have incise carving around the lock, sideplate, top tang & forend areas. Engraved brass fittings consist of butt caps, trigger guards, sideplates, thimbles & single pipes holding hardwood ramrods. Silver ornamentation consists of Verner's trademark double headed eagles on the wrists and 8 point stars forward of the pointed trigger guard finials. UNATTACHED ACCESORIES: 16" X 11 1/2" X 4" wood display box with mortised corners and brass handle. Brown felt 2 pistol fitted interior. Case contains a hand carved whale shaped bone brush on a hand forged chain with a brass nipple pick. Other accesories include: a brass priming flask, powder measure, nipple pick, flask spout, patch jags, and ball pullers along with a few spare flints. A printed card found in the case gives a brief historical perspective of Andrew Vernier's work. CONDITION: rifle & both pistols are near excellent retaining most of their original finish showing just a few light scratches & wear marks. Sound lock. Bright near excellent bores.
