FOR THE SPANISH & LOCAL FORCES.
An exceptionally large lot of silvered and gilded buttons used by the Spanish forces during the time of the Spanish American War. Most of the buttons are numbered and various units & branches are represented. The buttons are housed in a tinned iron chest measuring 24" x 13" x 12" high. The front of the box is painted "COL SERGT T HAYES 1 . COMPV _ _ _ _3 . R . W . FUS." There are various newspaper clippings from the Spanish American War period glued to the inside lid of the chest. Several clippings have come unglued but are included with the lot. It is impossible to know how this large accumulation came together. It could have been liberated from Cuba or possibly obtained by one of the early dealers such as Bannerman or Stokes-Kirk. CONDITION: buttons are unissued but many have acquired patinas from years of storage. Trunk shows heavy wear. (02-18039/BF). $500-1,500.
