Cal. 44 smooth bore. NSN. Bbl. 37" full oct. Bbl. signed "P. Newbeker" on top flat. Overall length 52". 4 Piece engraved brass patchbox w/ one piercing. Unmarked flintlock, appears to be original flint. Curly maple stock. Engraved brass sideplate w/ some incised carving on each side above the rear ramrod entrance ferrule. Very little information exists on this maker. CONDITION: wrist area shows signs of having originally been checkered but the checkering has nearly all been worn off. Buttplate & toeplate have been damaged at the toe to cover a sm. triangle of missing wood. Gun originally had set triggers, but back trigger is missing, trigger guard has been incorrectly replaced & does not fill the original trigger guard cavity. 13x1/4" Sliver of wood along the bbl. is missing on right hand side & 10x1/4" sliver of wood missing on left. There is a 4" section under the forend where ramrod hole broke through wood, patchbox door release needs adjusting. PROVENANCE: Collection of Dr. John Persing. (01-19547/RG). ANTIQUE. $1,500-2,000.
