HORNS OF CALEB HOBART. Caleb Hobart (1744-1837) Revolutionary War soldier who carved these 2 horns in 1816 & 1817 based on inscriptions. Larger horn 12.5" inscribed “CALEB HOBART AGE 73” “B. 1744” “1817”, the other 9” carved “CALEB HOBART” MARCH 4 1816”. Both horns also have additional Hobart family names. Horns have been well preserved in the Skowhegan family w/ no defects & beautiful surfaces. Horns are similarly decorated in full coverage w/ whimsical faces, pinwheels, trees, repeated half circles each w/ different design. These are truly fine pieces of American folk art from the early 19th century. CONDITION: very good to fine overall, both horns have smooth well patinaed surfaces, the smaller of golden honey color. Both have wood plugs, one plug is broken. (02-15645/JS). $2,000-2,500.
