CARTMELL OF DONCASTER, YORK. Cal. 52. NSN. The 7 5/8" swamped octagon brass barrels without patent breeches are engraved "BRISTOL" on tops. Barrels are unproofed. Feather engraved breech irons have "V" notch rear sights. Locks with chamfered plates having rebated tails are fitted with back sliding safetys, serpintine cocks, semi waterproof pans, bridled frizzens and roller feather springs with spatulate finials. Locks have some feather engraving. Makers name and address are at centers. European walnut stocks with checkered bag grips extend to muzzles and attach to barrels with single captive sidebolts without escutcheons. Double beaded trigger guards with pineapple finials and shamrock sideplates are brass. Vacant silver ovals are at tops of grips and hickory ramrods are held by single beaded pipes and brass thimbles. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: pistols are housed in a cutlery type burl walnut veneered case with brass corners and trim. Fancy flush medallion on top is engraved with monogram "IS". Interior is lined in green velvet and contains copper bodied powder, ball and patch flask, rosewood and brass loading rod, ebony handled turnscrew, nutcracker type ball mould marked "35" and a Europeon type steel oil bottle. Two covered compartments with bone knobs hold balls, flint tin and key which operates lock. CONDITION: good to very good. Barrels and brass furniture with old cleaning are toning to gold. Locks cleaned to silver with dark gray splotches. Stocks retain most old oil finish possibly original, with a large number of marks. One pistol has crack at bottom center of lockplate which continues and up toward barrel channel, with old repair noted on left side. The other pistol shows stress crack and lifted wood above and to the front of sideplate. Bores are good. Locks are operable. Case is good with enhanced finish. Interior cloth is good with rubs, stains and marks. Pistols fit well, but wear in case is not commensurate with gun condition. (01-23016/MGM). ANTIQUE. $3,000-4,000.
