BY REA & SON. Cal. 60 (pr). NSN (pr). (CA 1800). John Rea of London is known to be working with his first son between 1801-1804. This good pair of pistols probably date from that time. They have 8" barrels without patent breeches that are octagonal at breech and transition to round through a wedding band to flared muzzles. Top left flats are stamped with London proofs and John Rea barrel makers mark "IR" under flourish. Top flats are engraved "LONDON". Barrel tangs have border and foliate engraving. Locks having chamfered flat plates with rebated tails are fitted with high breasted serpentine cocks, rounded pans, bridled frizzens and feather springs with rollers which have dog nose finials. Center of each lock is engraved "REA & SON". Mahogany stocks with flat faced bag grips extend to muzzles and are brass mounted. Mounts are lightly engraved. Trigger guards have stylized pineapple finials. Stocks are pinned to barrels and walnut ramrods with tan horn tips mount through single beaded pipes and matching thimbles. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 3 letters from J. Roberts & Son regarding purchase and export of these pistols in 1971. CONDITION: good. Barrels showing considerable old cleaning with softening of edges are now toned to dark gold. Locks show old cleaning and are now gray brown and have scattered pitting on cocks and frizzens. Stock show an old oil refinish with light subsequent marks. Bores are good. Lock of one pistol does not have half cock notch, otherwise mechanically good. (01-21795/MGM) (2). ANTIQUE. $2,000-3,000.
