1) 12.75” Overall. 8” Blade, 1.5” wide, .3” thick. This is a very meaty well crafted weapon that would’ve made any Confederate happy. Possibly made from a large broken file, as steel this thick for knives was quite scarce. Some of the biggest and thickest knives also measure about .3” (see Confederate Bowie Knives, 2012 by Melton, Phillips, & Sexton). Turned wood tool handle, brass ferrule, 2.25” oval iron cross guard. CONDITION: very good overall. Iron patina. Still sharp. Wood grip has hand worn patina w/ a couple hairline cracks near brass pin that holds grip. 2) 14.5” Overall. 10.5” Dagger point blade, almost .3” thick. Like it’s mate above, well made, 2.75” hexagonal iron cross guard, iron ferrule, simple rectangular iron pommel, burled fruit wood grip. CONDITION: good -very good overall. Large crack from age near ferrule on one side along w/ old painted collection number on ricasso, iron patina. PROVENANCE: Roger Ballard collection. (02-14869/JS). $800-1,200.
