Cal. 54. NSN. Model 1842 Palmetto pistols are considered secondary Confederate arms. This gun is correct in configuration. Bbl. & lock markings appear to be of correct style “WM GLAZE & CO” & proofs “P / V / Palmetto tree” on bbl. & "PALMETTO ARMORY SC" circling Palmetto tree & "COLUMBIA / SC 1852" on lock. This gun however, is an early fake. Bill Albaugh commented in some late 1940s correspondence that he has seen "clever fakes" being sold of this pistol. Excellent articles written about these pistols appear on pg 19 of the January, 1962 American Rifleman by Harry Knode & in the journal of The American Society of Arms Collectors, issue 74, pgs 74-80, by Peter A. Schmidt. CONDITION: good to very good overall. Iron has dark brown patina w/ light pitting, as does lock, markings are crisp & well defined. Brass has light mustard patina. Mechanically fine w/ good smooth bore. (01-17234/JS). ANTIQUE. $800-1,200.
