This sword in near relic condition has good discernible "Columbia SC" marking on ricasso in the proper broken dies. Saber was made by Schnitzler & Kirschbaum of Solingen, Germany. All palmetto cavalries known are early S&K sabers w/ distinctive short ricasso, single stud throat fastener & ending ridge lines at quillon. All swords of this pattern are scarce, there are numerous fakes, but this example is unquestionably original in every regard. CONDITION: very good for a relic. 36" Blade is dark & pitted, but "Columbia SC" markings are correct & discernible. Wood grip is weathered, lacks its cord, leather & wire wrap. Hilt has braised repair in middle of knuckle bow at junction of the branches. Missing protective washer & a partial set of inspector initials can be seen on guard & abutting blade. Scabbard is pitted overall, especially at drag where there is an approx. 1" hole, but scabbard still fits sword adequately. (02-13603/JS). $1,000-1,200.
