MORRISON. Cal. 50-70. S# 99956. Bbl. 27 1/4" with Bradford, Maine Morrison markings plus dovetailed at muzzle for its sporting white bead sight. Mfg. 1866-1871 by Providence Tool Co. (112,000 units total) as Rifles (33 " barrels) or Carbines (20" barrels) with most sold to foreign governments. This was originally in 43 Spanish for a foreign contract that was canceled. One of 2,000 ordered by Connecticut State Militia in 1870 from the canceled order. In 1877 the firearms were sent back to be converted to 45-70. The toe line near its metal buttplate has an inletted steel oval that looks like a sling swivel base but is marked with "CONN." / "586". Serial number is properly located on forward face of receiver behind its plain aftermarket forend. Morrison was Maine's premiere gunsmith who had a work history into his early 90's; his works are highly sought and always of quality workmanship. Standing target sight attached to top of stock behind action with large target aperture; likely a modern reproduction. CONDITION: very attractive custom antique with near excellent blued barrel (including bore) and stylish forend. Original buttstock with numerous marks plus added finish; stock dimensions not compromised by sanding, etc. Receiver and buttplate have minimal original finish appearing grey patina. Rear sight attached with Phillips head screws. PROVENANCE: Estate of Groves Herrick. (01-28354/NW). ANTIQUE. $600-850.
