RIFLE. Cal. 40-70 Peabody. S# 398 matches on receiver, bbl., forend boss. Bbl. 28" part octagon. Receiver has Parker Hale aperture sight w/ windage adjustment mounted on approx. 1 3/4" added tang. Sight is graduated from 0-10. Equipped w/ screw-in aperture disk. Brass blade dovetail front sight. Bbl. has added dovetail approx. 4" ahead of the receiver which encroaches on the bbl. markings. Dovetail filled w/ Marble slot blank. This Peabody Martini rifle is marked on left side of receiver in gothic letters "WHAT CHEER" & "MID RANGE". Right side of receiver is also marked "PEABODY & MARTINI PATENTS". Bbl. is marked on top flat "MANUFACTURED BY THE PROVIDENCE TOOL CO. PROVIDENCE USA" (partial). These scarce rifles are named for the What Cheer rifle range in Providence RI, a popular target shooting range in the late 19th Century. The receiver is equipped w/ a cocking indicator & a sliding safety on the right side which engages the checkered trigger. Checkered walnut stock set w/ crescent buttplate. Forend has blued steel tip. Stock set has raised panels on both sides to match receiver. CONDITION: stock set has worn original finish w/ numerous handling marks. Checkering has flattened diamonds & notable sm. area of missing diamonds on top right of grip. Inletting for added tang shows hobbyist gunsmithing workmanship. Receiver shows traces of case color w/ thinning, light wear & areas turning patina. Bbl. turning overall gray & patina w/ scattered handling marks plus 4 notable perpendicular scratches on top behind front sight. Buttplate turned gray & patina. Added tang has been attached by braising & blind screw. Safety does not hold if trigger is pulled. Fair bore has worn lands turning dark in grooves. (01-22909/RW). ANTIQUE. $1,000-2,000
