WITH SPURIOUS "R. LONG" STAMP. Cal. 45. NSN. 32" octagon bbl. fitted w/ U-notch rear & brass front sights. Top flat in cleaned area is newly stamped "R. L. Long" "1843". Trade percussion lock by Golcher has stamp engraved on tail. Hammer has been replaced w/ old flat faced type. Stock of somewhat curly grain maple extends to muzzle w/ 2" brass cap that is pinned to bbl. Furniture is of brass w/ trigger guard having finger spur forming grip. Crescent buttplate has 4 1/2" return. Rectangular patchbox has tapered side panels & liberty cap type finial w/ wiggle & line engraving. Sideplate is of lozenge shape & a copper fish is inlet on face of sm. fluted cheekpiece. Hickory ramrod is held by 2 beaded pipes & matching tailpipe. CONDITION: iron parts w/ dark brown patina. Area on top of bbl. w/ name artificially aged & blued. Brass has old dark patina. Stock shows old oil refinish w/ some repaired cracks & wood around lockplate & along bbl. channel. Bore is fair, but pitted. Lock is operable. PROVENANCE: Collection of Dr. John Persing. (01-19620/MGM). ANTIQUE. $500-1,000.
