SMITH BY OWNER. Cal. 50 smooth bore. NSN. Bbl. 40" oct. to rnd. is unmarked. Percussion lock is unmarked. Sideplate is heavy beveled brass. Stock is incise carved behind cheekpiece. The gun has 14 silver inlays. The bbl. is held to the stock w/ wedges. CONDITION: percussion lock has an incorrect hammer & the bbl. appears to be shortened about 5" from the rear. There is a 4 1/2" x 1" piece of wood inlet through the cheekpiece down to the trigger guard which appears to have been put in by the gunsmith to hide some imperfection in the wood. Toe of the butt is cracked as usual from shrinkage. A few sliver wood repairs along forend of bbl. PROVENANCE: Collection of Dr. John Persing. (01-19541/RG). ANTIQUE. $1,000-1,500.
