KNIFE, DATED 1896. 11" x 3", sinew & thread sewn, 3" x 3" beaded geometric panel at top with quilled design above & below. White-heart red, navy blue, green, transparent pink, & white beads; red and blue dyed porcupine quill. "July 4th 1896" is written an old brown ink, when this sheath was collected most likely at unknown rendezvous. 12" utility knife with 8" long, 2" wide blade is different knife than it is pictured in center of page 3 of John Baldwin's 1997 text "EARLY KNIVES & BEADED SCABBARDS OF THE AMERICAN FRONTIER". Page 3 is Floyd Ritter collection. Rarely are these artifacts dated. CONDITION: good overall, sound, all beads intact, delicate quill work has large losses. PROVENANCE: From the Lifelong Collection of Glen E. Mattox. (02-18362/JS). $800-1,200.
