SEMI-AUTOMATIC PISTOL. Cal. 7.65mm. S# 37970. Bbl. 3 5/8". Pieper Model 1909/34 semi-automatic pistol mfg. by Steyr. The Model 1934 (Also known as the "Model 1909/34") was created as an upgrade for existing Steyr 1909 pistols, hence the earlier date and proof marks typically found on the bbls. Nearly all of the Model 1909/34 pistols are upgraded Model 1909, with less than 1,000 Model 1934 pistols believed to have been of new production at the Steyr factory. The left side of the bbl. is marked with patent information, followed by a "20." above a shielded "4" surmounted by an Imperial Austrian eagle coat of arms, with an Austrian "NPv" proof and additional patent information marked on the right. Frame is marked "STEYR" on the left side beneath the slide. Rear grip strap is police unit marked "S.W.8996", indicating issue to the Austrian Federal Security Force "Sicherheitswache" ("Security Guard") as found on page 131 of "History Writ in Steel" by L. Donald Maus. Metal components exhibit a blue finish overall, with the bbl. exhibiting an apparent period reapplied blue finish, possibly done at the time of upgrade. "S" safety lever indicator area is polished in-the-white. Bbl. lever, concentric circle safety lever, mag. release lever, and screws exhibit a nitre blue finish, with the trigger appearing to exhibit either a plated or polished in-the-white finish. Frame is mounted with 2-piece checkered wood grips, featuring an integral steel lanyard loop mounted below the left grip panel. Standard dovetailed blade front sight and integral V-notch rear sight on slide. All serialized parts are matching and include the frame, slide, bbl. (appears renumbered during the period, original S# "339"), and mainspring guide rod / bbl. latch assembly. MAGS: x1 blued steel 7-rd. CONDITION: metal components retain the majority of their original and apparent period reapplied blue finish, exhibiting some areas of wear fading to gray patina. Nitre blue parts show areas of wear fading to gray, with the trigger having acquired a mottled gray patina in contact areas. Bright bore, exhibiting consistent light pitting, while retaining well defined rifling throughout. Proper manual mechanics. Grips show overall smoothing, as well as some scattered marks and small impressions from handling and storage, with the right grip exhibiting a large crack that stems from the top of the panel and through the upper grip screw slot. (25-5409/MLW). CURIO. $500-700.
