Desks of this style and form were often used as military field desks by officers as well as clerks. The heavy wooden top has carrying handles on the side and sits atop a heavy wooden base, forming a portable office to organize paperwork. Variations of this style of desk can be seen in images from the 18th century to the late 20th century. This particular example has a base that is 32 3/4" high, 33 1/8" wide, and 23 1/2" deep. The top section is 18 3/4" high, 20" deep, and 30 1/2" wide. Covering the front of the desk is a slanted bifold door measuring 20" x 30 1/4". Copper corners reinforce the back, and three copper-plated hinges can be seen on the bifold front. The front also has a handle to aid in opening and closing, along with a lock just below the handle. The interior of the top has three copper-faced drawers for storage, as well as other areas for paper and implement storage. The base has a single lockable drawer with a slide-out writing surface. The heavy chamfered legs easily support the desk on top. The total height of the desk, when assembled, is 50". CONDITION: the desk shows expected overall wear but remains exceptionally solid and displays beautifully. (02-22820/BF). $600-1,000.
