LUGER SEMI-AUTOMATIC PISTOL. Cal. 7.65x21mm Parabellum. S# 4303. Bbl. 8 1/8". LP.08 Luger semi-automatic pistol mfg. by DWM and possibly reworked by Krieghoff for commercial sales. It is known that during the 1920s-1930s Krieghoff had purchased a small number of Luger pistols from DWM for commercial sales, with some of said pistols subsequently being reworked by Krieghoff. While this example bears no infallible proofs or markings denoting a rework by Krieghoff, the left side of the frame and bbl. exhibit a horizontal German Crown/N commercial nitro proof, which is believed to the associated with Lugers reworked by Krieghoff. This example bears no year of mfg. mark over the top of the chamber, with just a horizontal Crown/N commercial nitro proof and the S# marked on the left. Toggle is marked with the intertwined DWM monogram. Left side of the breechblock is marked with an Imperial German reichsadler proof, with a vertical Crown/N commercial nitro proof (also present on underside of bbl.) marked on the top right, next to the extractor. Frame is marked "GERMANY" just ahead of the trigger guard. Metal components exhibit what appears to be an older a reapplied blue finish overall, with some small parts include the takedown lever, trigger, safety lever, and ejector exhibiting a reheated straw finish. Frame is mounted with 2-piece checkered wood grips. Frame's stock lug has been ground off during the period. Dovetailed blade front sight, with tangent V-notch rear sight, graduated 1-8. Nearly all serialized parts are matching and include the frame, takedown lever, sideplate, trigger, safety lever & bar, bbl., rear sight base, bbl. extension, trigger bar, breechblock, toggles, as well as the grips. Rear sight leaf and slide are mismatched. Breechblock and toggles S# appear to have been stamped over another number, likely during the period. Grips are matching via a stamped "03", as well as with a handwritten "4303" in pencil on the interior of the panels. MAGS: 1 8-rd. mag. with wood bottom, faintly marked "GERMANY". CONDITION: metal components retain the vast majority of their reapplied blue finish, exhibiting some spots of light wear and thinning (primarily on edges), some scattered superficial handling marks, as well as some scattered spots of pitting beneath the bluing. Rear grip strap shows wear and thinning that shows through to gray patina. Strawed parts retain the majority of their finish, exhibiting some spots of wear that show through to gray patina. Rear toggle pin exhibits a small chip along its rim. Brilliant mirror bore, exhibiting a few spots of light pitting, while retaining well defined rifling throughout. Grips show mild smoothing, as well as some scattered marks and minor impressions from handling and storage, but otherwise remain sturdy and serviceable. PROVENANCE: The Estate Collection of Charles Wagner. (25-369/MLW). CURIO. $2,000-2,250.
