RIFLED MUSKET. Cal. 58. NSN. Bbl. 32 1/4". Bbl. is marked on top "1863" and on left side "V / P / eagle head" acceptance marks. Musket was assembled from modified parts as a cadet-type arm. The muzzle end of the shortened bbl. has been reduced in diameter to fit a model 1873 trapdoor bayonet. Three-leaf rear sight. Stud-type front sight appears to be reattached to bbl. by brazing. Beveled lockplate marked "SAVAGE, R.F.A.", "spread wing eagle / U.S." and dated 1863. Beveled 1863-type hammer. Ramrod is present. Walnut stock. Forend has been shortened and is now fastened by two bands. The former middle band now replaces the upper and carries the swivel. Forend tip has been reattached. Two-piece trigger guard with swivel. Buttplate has had markings removed. CONDITION: stock has worn arsenal rework finish with numerous handling marks. Stock has dowel repair on top behind breech and area of filler around lockplate screw. Metal is mostly bright having been cleaned over light oxidation in pitting. Lockplate and hammer have notable patina. Bore has strong lands with frosted grooves and scattered very find pitting throughout. (01-25596/RW). ANTIQUE. $1,000-1,300.
