MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 8mm Mauser. S# 6561 O. All visible numbers match except on the bolt assembly. Bbl. 29 1/4". Early production GEW 98 rifle from the national arsenal at Danzig. Lange rear sight graduated to 2000 meters. Inverted V front sight. Receiver ring is marked on top w/ Imperial crown, “DANZIG”, & “1903”, marked on right side w/ Imperial proofs & marked on left side w/ eagle acceptance mark. Left receiver rail marked “Gew 98.”. Bbl. is marked on top over chamber w/ “S”. Straight bolt handle. Cleaning rod & bayonet bar are present. Upper band retains parade hook. Narrow lower band w/ bottom swivel. Matching walnut stock set is marked on right side of butt w/ partially legible royal acceptance marks. Butt stock retains detachable swivel. Steel disc is marked “45.R.12.130.”. Left side of butt stock has scratched soldier initials “J.R.M.c.L.”. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 10" fullered blade bayonet marked on left ricasso “GOTTLIEBE HAMMESFAFR SOLINGEN FOCHE”. “Cross in pyramid”. Marked on right ricasso w/ armored knight & “BAYARD”. Marked on back of blade Imperial crown “W 17”. Smooth walnut grips. Bayonet equipped w/ flash guard. Bayonet finished bright turning gray & patina. Blade has been sharpened. Unmarked steel scabbard w/ dents & handling marks turning overall gray & patina w/ fine pitting. CONDITION: original finish stock set has extensive wear, dents & handling marks. Noticeable loss of wood in toe area. Original finish metal has wear & turning overall gray & patina w/ oxidation & scattered very fine pitting. Worn dark oxidized bore. (23-49/RW). CURIO. $700-900.
