ENGRAVED AUTO-LOADING SHOTGUN. Cal. 12 GA, 2 5/8". S# 5139, indicates production circa. 1903-1904. Bbl. 28" plain of Cockerill Steel with fixed Full choke and steel bead. Bbl. is marked "BROWNING AUTOMATIC ARMS Co OGDEN UTAH U.S.A." Classic square stern recoil operated A5 action with sliding safety in forward portion of trigger guard. Receiver is marked "FABRIQUE-NATIONALE-HERSTAL-LIEGE, BELGIUM-BROWNING'S-PATENTS/ OCT,,9.1900-DEC,17.1901-SEPT,30.1902-JUNE,16-1903". Action has full coverage FN European style Grade IV hand engraving. Game scenes on right side of receiver feature a pointer with flushing Hungarian partridge. Upper part of receiver on right side has a marsh scene with 2 flushing mallards. Left side of receiver shows a fox with a single flushing mallard. Upper part of receiver shows a field scene with 2 rooster pheasants. Scenes are surrounded by foliate scroll hand engraving and fancy borders that extend to the trigger guard along with the breech section of the bbl. Additional game scenes include 2 partridge on the trigger guard bow with a resting setter on the lower tang, a mule deer buck on the top tang, with a setter portrait on the bbl. Finger grooved forearm and straight grip walnut stock with point pattern hand checkering. LOP: altered to 13 13/16" over an aftermarket solid red London style pad. Toeline of stock and forearm cap have sling eyes. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: vintage pre-war blue leatherette hardcase with blue velour fitted interior. Case contains original style leather shotgun sling and sling eyes. Exterior of case lid shows small tears. Case interior shows light wear with small tears at contact points. CONDITION: bbl. has over 80% original blue showing small spots of corrosion. Action has a dull faded appearance from carry wear. Engraving remains sharp and clear. Refinished wood with freshened checkering shows small handling marks. Good mechanics. Bore is generally bright with an area of roughened appearance ahead of the chamber.
