Full standing view, Denver photographer, wearing Prairie belt, his signature wide brimmed Stetson style hat, Winchester 1873 carbine laid against table. Poetic 8-line inscription on verso, 20 years before he became known as the "Poet Cowboy" "..accept this humble token rustic shadow of your friend purest thoughts are oft unspoken sunshine oft with shadows blend. Let this photo then remind you of a comrade wild and free and whenever I may find you. you will find a friend in me". Signed: "JW Crawford / Capt Jack / Chief of scouts / U.S. Army / Ft Craig, Dec 12 '83". At this time Captain Jack was the "post trader" at Fort Craig, he continued in this role even after the foreclosed in 1885, continuing to be caretaker of the old military post.
