“LT. A.B. MARSTON, 18TH MAINE”. Standard configuration, floral pierced guard, sharkskin grip, patriotic panel edged blade, brass mounted leather scabbard. Top mount has script presentation “A. B. Marston / 18th Reg. / Maine Volunteers / from his friends / Bangor Aug 16 1862”. Arlington B. Marston (1834-1897) enlisted as 28 year old 2nd Lieutenant from Bangor August 1862. The 18th Maine would be redesignated 1st Maine Heavy Artillery in 1863. “A. B. Marston” is also finely engraved on the top of the guard which is most unusual. CONDITION: sword is very good overall retaining much of its original luster to blade with staining and pitting, hilt, pommel, and top mount retain much of their original gold wash. Scabbard body is sound, drag missing screw. (02-19257/JS). $2,000-3,000.
