SWORD BY HORSTMAN. Overall length: 39". Blade length: 32". Blade has a single wide fuller w/ a single narrow fuller above. Blade is etched over 2/3 of its length w/ various military, patriotic & foliate motifs including a spread winged eagle & lg. "US". Ricasso is stamped w/ a king's head indicating mfg. by Gebruder Weyersberg of Solingen. The sword is etched just above the ricasso, "W H HORSTMAN & SONS PHILADEPHIA" who were the retailers of this sword. Gilded brass, semi basket hilt w/ ornately pierced floral & foliate motifs in the guard. Knuckle bow has linear embellishments w/ acanthus leaves at the pommel joint. The face of the pommel is decorated w/ laurel leaves & berries. Solid silver grip w/ gilded simulated wire wrap. Gilded brass mounted iron scabbard. Extremely ornate mounts w/ the top mount featuring a standing Lady Liberty. The suspension loops are in the form of a serpent. Scabbard body has a bright plating. CONDITION: blade is quite striking w/ areas showing original factory polish. Etching is crisp & sharp. Hilt has areas of original gilded finish. Grip is undamaged & complete. Sword mounts have ample gilded finish remaining. Scabbard body is bright w/ a few scattered areas of cleaned pitting. (02-17520/BF). $2,500-3,000.
