OFFICER’S SWORD. Overall length: 40 1/2". Blade length: 33”. Blade has a single wide fuller with a single narrow fuller near the spine. Blade is etched over half its length with various military, patriotic & foliate devices, including a 4” panel that reads “Always Ready”. The ricasso is marked “W. CLAUBERG SOLINGEN (logo)”. Gilded brass hilt with a pierced semi-basket guard featuring oak leaves and an almost hidden “US”. Eagle head quillon and lightly decorated knuckle bow. Heavily sculpted pommel with an American eagle on the face. The coppery bronze sculpted grip has Lady Liberty on one side and a red cabochon measuring nearly 3/4" on the other side. Scabbard has a plum brown finish with large gilded brass mounts. The top mount features an American eagle on each side, and the center mount features classical stands of arms. The drag has a foliate & vine motif. CONDITION: blade has a medium gray patina with areas of cleaned light pitting. Hilt has traces of original gilding remaining coupled with a heavily tarnished finish. Scabbard remains quite solid with most of the original gilding remaining on the mounts.
