SWORD BY HORSTMANN OF PHILADELPHIA. This sword measures 39 1/2" overall with a 31 1/2" blade. Blade has a single wide fuller with a single narrow fuller near the spine. Blade is etched over half its length with various military, patriotic & foliate motifs. The blade was made by Gebruder Weyersberg and retailed by Horstmann. There is an etched mark near the ricasso that reads “WH HORSTMANN & SONS PHILADELPHIA”. Gilded brass hilt with heavily embellished pierced Foot Officer’s style guard. Knuckle bow is initially plain, but embellished 2” from the pommel. Pommel is heavily sculpted with floral & foliate motifs. Solid silver grip with multi-twist brass wire wrap. Plum brown finished iron scabbard with gilded brass classical mounts showing arms on the top & middle mount with acorns & leaves at the drag. CONDITION: blade has a medium gray mottled patina with scattered areas of discoloration. Hilt is quite nice with most of the original gilded finish remaining. Grip is undamaged. Scabbard shows light overall wear with gilded finish remaining in the protected areas. (02-19423/BF). $1,800-2,500.
