GEORGE BALDWIN 40TH MASSACHUSETTS VOLUNTEERS. Inscribed in fine script on top scabbard mount: “Presented to / Lt. G. H. Baldwin / Co. D. 40th Reg / Ms. Vols / July 25, 1863”. George Henry Baldwin (1836-1867) enlisted on the date of presentation of the sword. He would be wounded June 3, 1864 at the battle of Cold Harbor and would resign his commission November 1864 & return home to Cambridge & die 3 years later at the age 28. His death certificate lists cause death as pulmonary consumption & his occupation “soldier”. CONDITION: very good overall. 30.5" Blade retains much of its original polish w/ areas of staining & pinprick pitting. Tip is slightly bent. Leather scabbard body is sound & solid w/ original scalloped throat & middle mount, inscription is crisp. The drag is replacement w/ steel screw. Strong traces of gold wash found in protected areas of the 2 original scabbard mounts & hilt. Leather grip is intact w/ scuffing & couple of cracks. Twisted brass wire wrap is tight.
