DUDLEY WHITE. This rare presented Medal of Freedom includes the neck order featuring five golden eagles with an interior red enamel pentagon, a white enamel star, and a central blue enamel disc with 13 golden stars representing the 13 original colonies. This order comes in its original satin-lined wooden case with a miniature medal, ribbon bar, and lapel pin. The back of the neck order is engraved “Paul Dudley White” with the number “51”. Dr. Paul Dudley White was a physician, humanist, and teacher who led the way toward greater knowledge of heart disease and promoted international understanding through scientific medicine. Dr. White received degrees at Harvard in 1908 and 1911, as well as innumerable honorary degrees in his lifetime. He was a member of the faculty at Harvard from 1920 to 1950 and served on the staff of Massachusetts General Hospital. He received countless international awards for his work in medicine and, of course, the 51st Presidential Medal of Freedom awarded by President Lyndon Baines Johnson in September of 1964. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: a book titled “The Presidential Medal of Freedom: Winners and Their Achievements” by Bruce Wetterau. An original photograph of the President presenting the award to Dr. White. Correspondence and copied information about the medal and Dr. White. CONDITION: the Presidential Medal of Freedom and ancillary pieces show nearly no wear.
