GAME GUN. Cal. 12 Ga. 2-5/8". S# E580 (Circa 1912). In Volume 2 of British Gunmakers, Nigel Brown relates that the highest known E series number is 570 (Circa 1910). This gun obviously a bit later has 29" dovetailed steel barrels engraved "George Gibbs Bristol & 35 Savele Row London W." on narrow game rib with dolls head extension. Barrel flats are stamped with Birmingham nitro proofs for 2-1/2" chambers. Case hardened sidelock action is stocked to the fences and features automatic safety ("SAFE" inlaid in gold), screw grip third fastener and double triggers. Action and lockplates are engraved with full coverage very nicely cut shaded scroll. "GEORGE GIBBS" in scrolled banner on each lockplate. Blued and scroll engraved trigger guard has S# on tang. Very nicely figured and well streaked European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14-1/2" over checkered wood butt. Well shaped drop points and closely spaced flat top point pattern checkering are at grip and a vacant silver oval is on toeline. Matching splinter Southgate ejector forend has Anson release. MEASUREMENTS: BBLS: Bore Diameter: L .729. R .729. Restriction: L .032 (full) R .011 (lt. mod). Wall thickness: L .030. R .029. STOCK: DAH: 2-1/16". DAC: 1-7/16"+. CAST: about 3/8" off. LOP: 14-1/2". WEIGHT: 6 lb. 8 oz. CONDITION: very fine as partially refinished. Barrels retaining nearly all of a good quality re-black. Engraving is slightly softened. Action retains most of its original case hardening color while lockplates retain over 80% of their color. Trigger guard re-blued and shows some scattered light pitting. Stocks exhibit nearly all of a light oil refinish, sharp edges preserved. Checkering has not been re-cut. Bores bright and shiny. Action is tight. Ejectors are slightly out of time. (24-5868/MGM).
