WITH A LATER FIELD COVER. Helmet has a polished steel body with a 3-section “lobster tail” extending down the back to protect the neck. The helmet has a gilded brass spike base with a steel spike top. The Prussian eagle front plate is gilded brass. Gilded brass scaled chinstrap with trefoil ends. The right side of the helmet has a Prussian kokarde, and the left side kokarde is missing. The tail is bordered with rounded brass rivets. The front interior visor is green enamel, and the rear visor is lined in brown velvet. The liner is fine red Moroccan leather cinched at the top. This lot also includes a tan cotton helmet cover for a WWI infantry spike helmet. The interior is marked “62 HOLST WERBER 1916 DRGM”. There is also a name inked on the inside that is partially illegible. CONDITION: helmet shows light wear overall and appears to have been professionally cleaned. The helmet cover shows light overall wear with minor staining. PROVENANCE: From the Lifelong Collection of Glen E. Mattox. (02-18576/BF). $2,000-3,000.
