Cal. 44-40. NSN. This gun is pictured and described on page 16 of Hartzler & Knowles 1995 text "Indian Tomahawks & Frontiersmen Belt Axes". A copy of the scarce book accompanies rifle. It is described as "Indian plains rifle used on horseback. Barrel is covered with rawhide with two large feathers. The rear stock is also covered with rawhide with brass diamond-shaped studs and brass tacks. The butt plate, as done with most of them, has been taken off." UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Daniel Hartzler & James Knowles "Indian Tomahawks & Frontiersmen Belt Axes", 263 pages, rifle is pictured on page 16. CONDITION: good to very good overall, appears as found with heavy iron patina, was missing forestock when rawhide wrapped, mechanics are good, dark bore with discernible rifling, top tang screw is replaced. The two eagle feathers shown in book were removed prior to consignment. (01-26572/JS). $3,000-4,000.
