BAYONET. Cal. 69. S# NSN. Bbl. 44.75". Standard configuration of type I model 1795 (made 1799-1806), 59.5” overall, 44.75” barrel stamped top of breech “US” & proofed on left “P / eaglehead / V”. Pointed tail lock, “SPRINGFIELD in vertical arc, eagle over script “US”. Buttplate dated 1801. Battery with flat cock with heart shaped cutout, detachable faceted pan, faceted frizzen face with medial ridge & curved tail, frizzen spring terminates in fleur de les shaped finial. High comb walnut stocked with 3 spring retained bands, pointed ended trigger guard. Inspection script “A” opposite lock. “M” inspection initial rear of triggerguard. Bayonet has 14.5” blade inspected “US” & “NC”. Only 3,205 muskets were made in 1801. CONDITION: good to very good overall, metal has iron patina, sharp markings on lock, pitted trigger guard & buttplate. Stock is sound with hand worn patina, discernible inspection marks. Bayonet fits loosely and made for gun with larger lug. Mechanics fine, dark smooth bore. (01-22765/JS). $2,000-3,000.
