BAYONET. Cal. 70. NSN. Standard configuration of type II model 1795 (made 1806-1809), 59.25” overall, 44.5” barrel proofed on left “eaglehead / P” & small “SNY” on top. Pointed tail lock dated 1808, forward of cock: script “US” over eagle & “SPRINGFIELD in arc. Battery with flat cock with heart shaped cutout, removable round bottom iron pan, frizzen face with medial ridge & straight tail, frizzen spring terminates in triangular finial. Walnut stocked with 3 spring retained bands, buttplate dated “1808”. Bayonet has 14” thin fullered blade stamped “US”. Less than 6000 muskets were made in 1808. CONDITION: good to very good overall, sling swivels are later additions. Metal is smooth iron patina, sharp markings. Stock is sound with hand worn patina, no discernible inspection marks. Lock functions fine, smooth dark bore. Bayonet fits musket well with “C” proof near lug marked “G”. (01-22770/JS). ANTIQUE. $2,500-3,500.
