& BAYONET. Cal. 69. NSN. Standard configuration of type III model 1795 (made 1809-1814), 59.5” overall, 44.5” barrel stamped top of breech “US” & proofed on left “P / eaglehead / V”. There is also later deep punched cartouche. Pointed tail lock dated 1812, script “US” over eagle & “SPRINGFIELD in arc. Original correct battery with flat cock with heart shaped cutout, integral round bottom pan, faceted frizzen face with medial ridge & straight tail, frizzen spring terminates in triangular finial. High comb walnut stocked with 3 spring retained bands, buttplate dated “1812” on top. Final inspection proof of intertwined script “US” opposite lock. “JS” inspection initials rear of triggerguard. Bayonet has 12.5” shortened blade inspected with early “U.S”. Only 10,000 muskets were made in 1812; few survive in original flint with no later armory modifications. CONDITION: very good overall, original flint, ramrod is reproduction and slings later additions. Metal has mottled iron patina, sharp markings other than eagle on lock weak. Stock is sound with hand worn patina, discernible inspection marks. Lock missing mainspring, but other components have same tiny proofs as battery. Smooth dark bore. Bayonet fits musket well with “M” proof near lug marked “H”. (01-22766/JS). ANTIQUE. $2,000-3,000.
