Among the most beautiful antebellum flag you will find is this four-color lithograph originally designed by John R. Penniman of Boston. Each Maine militia regiment was given a flag, but we can document no more than 3 surviving examples, one being in the Maine State Museum & the other is in the Maine Historical Society. Printed on silk, the well-executed state seal is quite impressive. Accompanying flag is a sm. note which reads “dedicated to Capt. John Anderson / July 5, 1872, Portland, Maine”. John Farwell Anderson (1823-1887) a well-known antiquarian & collector of relics of local history. This most likely was displayed in his ancestral home “Maplewood Farm” (Anderson-Lord House). REFERENCE: To be included in noted flag historian David Martucci's upcoming text “Symbols of the Pine Tree State”. CONDITION: flag was not inspected out of frame but the exposed areas measure about 23" wide x 28" tall appearing in very good condition w/ good colors. Flag was archivally framed & frame notes that museum glass was used. (02-14984/JS). $3,500-4,500.
