LEVER ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 44 RF. S# 14962. 24" oct barrel, full magazine with screwed-in cap, secured with 2-screw band near muzzle, 2-line Henry's & King's Patent marking, 900 yard Henry rear sight, brass blade front sight mounted on inset iron base. Frame has staple & saddle ring which is seen on other early model 1866 rifles. Mounted with Henry style lightly figured walnut, Henry style crescent buttplate with trap, forearm is higher grade figured walnut of early style without nosecap or barrel band. Forend is attached by screw through central brass escutcheons. S# 15052 (page 75 Madis, THE WINCHESTER BOOK) has identical configuration and is only other example I can note. Serial number observed on left side of lower tang, in both tang channels of buttstock, inside toe of buttplate is numbered 5763. Bottom flat of barrel has 2 "X" and 2 punch dots and "W" stamped near breech. Like S# 15052, a tiny font matching assembly number "1556" was observed on each sideplate and lower tang. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: copy of Julia sale of nearly identical gun. CONDITION: appears very good overall, barrel & magazine are professionally refinished. When JR LaRue cataloged S# 15052 for James Julia Auctions March 15, 2015 as lot 1191; he stated the barrel & magazine was most likely reproduction by the late master gunsmith Ron Kudrick. That nearly identical rifle still sold for over $35,000 at that auction. I am sure the Winchester collecting community will have their own opinions and rifle will sell for its value. Mechanically fine, good rifled bore. (01-26800/JS). ANTIQUE. $4,000-8,000.
