ATTACHABLE CANTEEN BUTTSTOCK FOR ‘51 NAVY REVOLVER. Colt was awarded Patent No. 22626 on Jan. 18th 1859 for this new style attachable buttstock. On the same day he was awarded Patent No. 22627 for a stock w/ an internal canteen. The stocks are scarce; ones w/ a canteen are definitely rare. In addition, this example is marked w/ inspector’s initials “RPB” on left side at grip. S# is in front of sling loop on bottom of front casting & on top of brass buttplate. Walnut stock is made in 2 pieces surrounding internal pewter canteen. Another sling loop is 3" back from toe. CONDITION: very good to fine, brass toned to mustard brown. Traces of blue remain on mounting hook. Wood retains most of its original finish w/ numerous marks. Inspector’s mark sharp, but not fully struck. Canteen cap is missing its retaining chain. PROVENANCE: The Estate Collection of Gary Parietti. (02-15321/MGM). $3,000-6,000.
