CARBINE. Cal. 303 British. S# 69474. Bbl. 21". Scarce artillery carbine mfg. in 1884. Receiver marked on right side w/ "crown" "VR" "ENFIELD 1884". Smaller crown visible underneath date appears to be a Birmingham mark & along w/ III & 1 would be apparently where the rifle was rebarreled to 303 from .450/.577 Martini Henry. Left side of receiver marked also "crown" "VR" "ENFIELD 1884" "Birmingham crown" w/ inverted arrow. Bbl. marked over chamber w/ "E" indicating Enfield rifling. Bbl. has proof marks on left side. Receiver also has numerous view marks. Ladder rear sight. Inverted "V" front sight w/ protective ears. Bayonet lug is present. Cleaning rod channel has been filled. Bbl. band screw has been replaced by riveted pin. Stacking swivel is present. Walnut stock set. Rear swivel hole has been filled. Buttstock has vertical row of tiny steel pins on both sides & sm. roughly circular indentations approx. 5/8" in diameter on both sides. CONDITION: stock set has arsenal rework type finish w/ significant loss of wood inletted areas. Buttstock has several sm. cracks & missing chips behind receiver. Buttstock has 2 cracks on right side extending forward of butt. Forend has sm. area of wood missing on right rear & crack extending 3" rearward from the bbl. band. Metal has turned overall gray w/ patina. Numerous sm. dents, scratched & handling marks. Sm. dents are notable at top of receiver & breech block. Bore is turning dark w/ worn lands & fine pitting throughout. (01-20097/RW). ANTIQUE. $300-400.
