Cal. 7.5mm French. S# P26310. Bbl 23". MAS 36 bolt action rifle manufactured by St. Etienne on a Chatellerault (MAC) manufactured receiver. While primarily a manufacturer of machine guns, Chatellerault manufactured MAS 36 receivers from March to October of 1945. Approximately 16,000 receiver were produced by MAC before it was discovered that the receivers were out of tolerance and production was terminated. Of the 16,000 produced, only 6,101 receivers were found to be in spec, with the remaining MAC receivers being scrapped. This example is stamped with "E", "B", and "G" inspector proofs on the left side of the chamber, with a Century Arms International import stamp on the left side of the receiver above the serial number. Rear of receiver is stamped "MAC" just below the rear sight assembly, indicating manufacture by Chatellerault. Metal components exhibit a phosphate finish, with the furniture consisting of solid wood. Matching numbers are present on the receiver, bolt, floorplate, trigger guard, as well as on the forend. Buttstock and spike bayonet do not match. CONDITION: metal components retain the majority of their arsenal phosphate finish overall, with some small areas of wear and some superficial handling marks that show through to mild silvering. Very bright bore, exhibiting some scattered spots of minor pitting and retaining strong rifling throughout. Wood furniture shows some scattered marks and minor impressions from storage and handling, but is otherwise fine. Buttstock exhibits an arsenal repair at the rear of the comb. A nice example of a rare MAC receiver MAS 36 rifle. (23-2567/MLW). CURIO. $500-800.
