Similar to the Mexican War shakos, this pattern was contracted late in the war, January 1864 by Horstmann & by at least one other Philadelphia contractor. Few were issued & few have survived. 5.5" front w/ original chinstrap w/ eagle side buttons, original looped crossed cannon insignia, restruck eagle hat plate, surplus original fittings, pasted Horstmann label inside crown, original 2" sweat band. One of the most striking Civil War enlisted pieces of headgear complete w/ aiguillette w/ red wool tassels. CONDITION: good overall, dark blue wool body has scattered moth damage, pasteboard body is sound, sweat band complete & sound. Leather visor sound w/ a few wrinkles, worsted cords & insignia very good. (02-14815/JS). $3,000-4,000.
