Christian Roby (1814-1897) was well known tool maker prior to the Civil War. He converted his large shop into manufacture of swords for the US government and by war’s end was the 2nd largest contractor delivering more than 50,000 swords to the Union. Roby also made officer swords of excellent quality. His rarest privately sold item was his uniquely designed bowie knife with cast bronze eagle head pommel and turned ribbed wood grip. Examples are shown in Peterson & Flayderman. Originals rarely come to market and this example is nicely full firm marked on ricasso: “C. ROBY & C0 / W. CHELMSFORD / MASS. 13” overall, 8.25” clip point blade. CONDITION: very good overall. Blade gray with old cleaning & sharpening, staining & pitting. Grip has good patina. (02-17217/JS). $6,000-8,000.
