SURVIVAL RIFLE. Cal. 22LR. S# 92846-1. Bbl. 16". Mfg. 1959-1973. The ArmaLite AR-7 Explorer is an interesting .22LR Rifle that lives on in the Charter Arms & Henry Repeating Arms library and is familiar to many firearms enthusiasts. Traditionally offered w/ a large plastic stock that doubled as a storage compartment & flotation device, the example we have here is a bit different. A shipment of AR-7s was shipped to Israel where they were modified to their specifications & issued as Pilot Survival Rifles. Their modifications included adding a collapsible wire stock, an FAL Pistol Grip, a barrel shortened to 13" in length & the addition of Israeli 98K rifle front sight. In the mid 1990s approximately 200 of these rifles, and some parts kits, minus the receiver, were reimported from Israel by Bricklee Trading Co of CA & fitted w/ a 3" permanent muzzle brake to comply w/ USA barrel length laws. The receivers were scrubbed of the Israeli markings, leaving only the serial number, and the ArmaLite company info on the barrel, along w/ the abbreviated importer markings. These were interesting & collectable 30 years ago, and even more so today, when they infrequently find their way to the market. This example is sporting a green canvas sling & rubber cover over bottom of pistol grip. Right side barrel markings include; "ARMALITE AR-7 EXPLORER CAL. 22 LR / COSTA MESA, CA. MADE IN U.S.A. / B.T.C. S.E.M.CA.". Adjustable peep rear sight. MAGS: 1 steel 8 rd. CONDITION: While the receiver & barrel still retains a high amount of its finish, there are scattered areas of thinning & drag lines. Right side of receiver appears to have been refinished which would coincide w/ the sterilizing they underwent before leaving Israel. Wire stock locks tightly in the extended position. Bright bore w/ strong rifling. Fire control mechanism appears to function correctly when cycled by hand. (25-2238/JZ). CURIO. $500-800.
