RIFLE MUSKET. Cal. 70. NSN. The Pattern 1851 Rifle Musket is among the rarest British imported confederate arms. As many as 15,000 of these arms were imported 1861 and last in January 1862. The survival is however is tiny, these arms had already seen hard use in British Army during the Crimean war. Confederate invoices and arsenal repair records show these guns listed with a variety of names 2nd hand 1851 rifles, old army pattern rifle, Brown Bess 1851 pattern, etc. These shot 70 caliber minié ball, originally the Enfield pattern smooth sided ball which is found in many early battlefield sites in quantities like Port Hudson & Shiloh battlefields. This is one of the least encountered of all the British imports to the Confederacy. The Confederate viewer stamp "CH" over "1" in circular cartouche is found on top of comb just forward of buttplate tang. Rifle is in the standard configuration of this pattern originally made and dated 1853, with additional 1861 proofs on the left breech of 39" barrel which are crisp and prominent, the original British military proofs on top of barrel are mostly obscured as noted on most survivors. This is a very nice complete & original survivor of a Confederate used 69 caliber minié rifle, rarer than any Richmond or Fayetteville. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: copy of pertinent pages from the "THE ENGLISH CONNECTION" by Russ Pritchard & Corky Huey, detailing this rarely offered longarm. CONDITION: very good overall, appears complete and matching throughout including original long range rear sight and sling swivels which are so often missing. Mechanically fine, clear worn rifled bore. (01-26885/JS). ANTIQUE. $4,000-6,000.
