WILSON, HOUSTON TX. This possibly unique distinctive cavalry branched hilted officer’s sword has 30 1/4" slightly curved heavy unstopped fullered blade. Unique possibly to J. C. Wilson of Houston, Texas are swords with solid cast hilt with integral cast short oval pommels and long tapered quillon. This is first example we have seen with 3-branched cavalry style hilt as others are multi-branched. One multi-branched identified example was carried by an officer in the 10th Arkansas & is pictured and described on page 166 “Confederate Presentation & Inscribed Swords & Revolvers” by Dan Hartzler, 1988. Condition: very good overall, blade is gray/bright with noticeably slightly crooked bow about 10" from hilt & a couple sm. laminated flaws so common to Confederate steel. Grip is spirally carved wood with thin brass wire over thin leather veneer wrap which is mostly intact, worn though at high areas. Accompanying braised iron scabbard is brass mounted and fits sword perfectly. Brass scabbard mounts and hilt have matching medium mustard patina. (02-13752/JS). $6,000-8,000.
