Gustav Dentzel (Germany, 1844-1909) immigrated to the U.S. in 1860 from Germany where he opened a cabinet making shop in Pennsylvania. After tiring quickly of making cabinets, he built himself a small portable carousel that he could take with him when he traveled around the country. Realizing that people had a great love for his carousel, he entered the carousel making business in 1867. The giraffe posed with upraised head and extended neck with brown glass eyes. The saddle with turquoise, silver and pale green; saddle blanket and trappings with scrolling designs. The saddle with carved eagle heads along the side borders. SIZE: overall 67" t. CONDITION: very nice professionally restored painted surface. Stirrups absent, otherwise very good. PROVENANCE: Lifelong California Collection. (05-985/TG). $7,500-12,000.
