Cal. 30 Luger. S# 834e. Bbl. 4 3/4". Looking to update their current military sidearm and being unsatisfied with the domestically designed Ahlberg pistol, the Finnish Ministry of Defense went to DWM in hopes of acquiring a contract for the P.08 pistol. DWM, unable to to fulfill this request due to the Treaty of Versailles, could only offer Finland the Model 1920 Commercial Luger chambered in 7.65x21mm Parabellum (.30 Luger). Ultimately, the Finnish Ministry of Defense accepted these Lugers, designating them as the "M/23", with a small number being rebarreled for the 9x19mm cartridge. This example, an M/23 Luger, is marked "1918" over the top of the chamber, with DWM arsenal proofs and an Imperial German Reichsadler (Reichsadler repeated on left side of breechblock) marked on the right. Toggle is marked with the DWM monogram logo. Rear grip strap is import marked "PRI GARDEN CITY KS/ DWM P08 30 LUGER GERMANY" along the sides of the stock lug. Metal components exhibit a blue finish overall, with some small parts exhibiting a straw finish. Frame is mounted with 2-piece checkered wood grips. Unmarked Finnish replacement bbl. with Lahti pattern blade front sight and fixed rear sight modified into a U-notch configuration. Nearly all numbers are matching and include the frame, takedown lever, trigger, safety lever & bar, bbl., bbl. extension, breechblock, extractor, firing pin, as well as the toggles. Hold-open latch has been renumbered to match. Sideplate and grips are unnumbered. MAGS: 1 8-rd. with unmarked wood plug. CONDITION: metal components retain large amounts of their apparent original factory blue finish, exhibiting areas of wear and thinning that are fading to gray patina, scattered superficial handling marks, as well as scattered spots of light surface oxidation and pitting overall. Strawed parts have mostly faded to a gray patina, exhibiting scattered spots of light pitting and age related discoloration. Bore exhibits consistent light pitting and streaks of mild to moderate pitting along the edges of the lands, while retaining strong rifling throughout. Trigger bar has been partially ground, alloying the pistol to fire even when the safety is engaged. Grips are very good, showing some scattered handling marks overall. (25-6056/MLW). CURIO. $800-1,400.
