DERRINGER PISTOL. Cal. 41 RF. S# 71. Bbl. 2 1/2". 1 of only approx. 9,000 No. 2 derringer pistols mfg. by National Arms Co. prior to the company's purchase by Colt in 1870. The top of the bbl. is marked "NATIONAL ARMS CO. BROOKLYN. N.Y.". Sides of the brass frame exhibit scroll engraving on a punch dot background, with additional engraving present on the top and rear strap of the frame, as well as on the sides of the bbl. towards the muzzle and breech. Frame is mounted with 2-piece smooth wood grips. Left grip panel is without a brass screw escutcheon. German silver or silver blade front sight with V-notch rear sight on hammer. All serialized parts are matching and include the frame (beneath left grip panel), bbl. (underside), as well as the grips. CONDITION: brass frame retains scant traces of its original silver finish beneath the grips, exhibiting scattered handling marks, and with the balance exhibiting a mellow patina. Steel parts exhibit a gray patina, with the bbl. exhibiting consistent mild pitting and a few scattered spots of moderate pitting overall. Bore exhibits moderate pitting, while retaining worn partially discernible rifling throughout. Front sight shows a dark gray patina on either side, with a brighter appearance along edges. Grips show wear, with scattered superficial marks and impressions. A very early example of a National Arms Co. No. 2 derringer. PROVENANCE: Estate Collection of Nicholas Apergis. (01-27439/MLW).
