RIFLE. This is the exact knife pictured & described on page 157 of Al Hardin’s 1963 text “The American Bayonet”. 14" Overall, 9" clip point blade in original blued steel scabbard. Norm Flayderman describes this rare knife better than anyone in his monumental text “THE BOWIE KNIFE”: "No Official U.S. Model (or contracted) knife or bayonet more closely embodied the idealized features of the Bowie Knife. Popularly known to the collecting world as the "Bowie-bayonet" for the Model 1898 Springfield-Krag rifle, it was officially designated "Combination Entrenching Knife-bayonet" but proved inadequate for digging rifle pits. Its wide 9" single edge blade is marked on obverse ricasso 'U.S.' & dated '1900' on reverse. Steel mountings finished bright; dark wood grips. Steel scabbard in the curved shape of the blade w/ blued finish & steel fitting to affix on to waist belt. CONDITION: fine overall, retaining virtually all original luster to blade, two wood slab riveted grip has hand worn patina & light chipping, scabbard retains most of its original blue finish. PROVENANCE: Ex-Harry Berry Collection. (02-13874/JS). $2,000-3,000
