BROTHER, COMPANY F, 2ND ALABAMA CAVALRY, MADE BY LEWIS CRENSHAW, HOPE HULL, ALA. This famous knife was made in Hope Hull, Alabama in the early Civil War. Three other examples are known & at least one has family descent of Shackleford family. George Washington Shackleford (1827-67), Joseph Shackleford (1835-1902), Madison Shackleford (1838-1905), & brother-in-law Bill Allen (1824-1864, killed in Atlanta) are all thought to have carried these knives 4 knives. All were members of Co. F, 2nd Alabama cavalry. This knife is pictured & described on page 172 of Confederate Bowie Knives, Melton, Phillips, & Sexton, 2012: “There is a beauty in the simple lines of this knife. Nothing fancy or extra, but everything was done well w/ a precise fit.” This massive knife is 20.75? long w/ a 15.75? spear-point blade, 2” wide w/ 7” sharpened top edge, 5” iron crossguard. Accompanied by Mr. Ballard’s hand drawn display card. PROVENANCE: Lewis Crenshaw, blacksmith, Hope Hull, AL, 1861; James F. Shackleford, Trussville, AL; Jim Blackburn Collection; Lifelong collection of Roger Ballard. CONDITION: very good overall w/ scattered staining & pitting. Oak slab grips retain a hand worn patina.
