CAVALRY SABER. Classic B. Douglas, Columbia, SC made saber with about as fine a blade that is encountered on any Confederate saber. 34” heavy flat unfullered blade is mostly bright with original factory polish. B. Douglas & Co” is among the most obscure of sword makers though their ads can be found in several newspapers offering swords they make at their factory at the old foundry on Washington Street, Columbia. We can identify this saber because there are signed examples of several patterns stamped “B. DOUGLAS & CO”. CONDITION: fine, blade as noted is bright with most of its original factory finish, old sharpening, staining and light pitting. Grip retains most all original leather with few scuffs, 0nly 3 turns of original twisted brass wire remain under distinct Douglas mushroom shaped undecorated pommel. Lap seamed soldered brass mounted scabbard is not the typical Douglas associated pattern, but scabbard is Confederate manufacture and fits loosely. (02-19155/JS). $4,000-5,000.
